One Year of the Konak Institute
A Year of Renewal, Reflection, and Community Building
As the Konak Institute marks its first year of activity, we reflect with deep gratitude and renewed commitment on what has been an extraordinary journey of cultural, educational, and spiritual engagement. Founded to serve as a platform for the preservation and revitalization of Albanian Muslim heritage and the nurturing of intellectual and spiritual growth, the Institute has already become a vibrant hub of learning, dialogue, and creativity.
Over the past year, the Konak Institute has proudly hosted leading Muslim scholars whose work is internationally recognized for bridging the classical Islamic tradition with the most pressing questions of our time. Among them were Dr. Tim Winter (Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad) of the University of Cambridge and Dr. Jonathan Brown of Georgetown University. Their presence and contributions have affirmed the Institute's commitment to offering intellectually rigorous, spiritually grounded programs that speak to both tradition and modernity.
Our efforts have been strengthened through collaborations with key institutions, including the Faculty of Islamic Studies in Prishtina (Kosova), the Office of the Mufti in Shkodër, the Erasmus Center, and the Minber Center in Tirana. These partnerships have enriched our programs and expanded our reach within the region and beyond.
Among our major achievements have been three exhibitions that reflect the complexity and richness of Albanian Muslim history. One exhibition focused on Islamic artifacts that survived the communist regime, another displayed manuscripts and devotional objects from Shkodra, and a third showcased visual propaganda from the communist war against religion. These exhibitions have not only preserved memory but also opened space for public dialogue on heritage, faith, and resilience.
We’ve also welcomed artists, writers, and academics to reflect on these themes, fostering a creative atmosphere of cultural renewal. Through cultural events, we have highlighted the work of contemporary voices who are reshaping Albanian Muslim identity through literature, art, and scholarship.
Looking ahead, the Konak Institute is preparing to launch the first Museum of Muslim Life in Albania, our flagship project that will serve as a national center of memory, education, and culture. At the same time, we continue to develop our curriculum for religious education for children, designed with both tradition and modern pedagogical insight in mind.
We are also expanding our online course offerings in religious literacy, taught by leading scholars in the Albanian language, and we plan to release a series of publications highlighting our work in heritage preservation, historical memory, and community formation centered on spiritual and ethical values.
Our vision remains rooted in the Albanian Muslim experience. As we move forward, we remain dedicated to building institutions, producing knowledge, and cultivating spaces where faith, beauty, and understanding can thrive together.
Thank you to all who have supported us in our first year. We invite you to join us as we continue this important work.
We warmly invite you to become part of this growing community. We also welcome those who wish to volunteer their time and expertise or to support our work through donations.
